Peterhead in the Community - Football Memories

Football Memories with Peterhead FC

There are so many triggers which can take people back through the years to recall footballing memories and stories. Kicking a ball on a Saturday morning, standing on the freezing terraces in midwinter, freshly mown grass, the roar of the crowd, the mention of a player’s name, cups being held aloft, the experience of travelling to a game. 2019 marks the tenth anniversary of the internationally-recognised Football Memories project in Scotland, whereby Alzheimer Scotland and Football Memories Scotland have formed partnerships with local organisations to provide relaxed and welcoming environments for those affected by dementia where they can reminiscence, share stories and have fun.

The benefits of the project are many. Significant improvements have been recorded in the quality of life of those living with dementia (including carers), memory processes are stimulated, and social interaction and confidence are boosted. Involvement in the project eases agitation, improves mood and decreases behavioural issues, not only at each session but before and after those too. And importantly, laughter and fun is enjoyed by all.

Recognising that these benefits can apply to people affected by other conditions, such as social isolation, reduced mobility, recovery from strokes and others, the Football Memories project is now adopting a fully inclusive approach to it’s membership. Peterhead Football Club have collaborated with Alzheimer Scotland and Football Memories Scotland to launch a new group in the town on this basis. The group meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every month with the next meeting to be held in the Boardroom at Balmoor on TUESDAY 17th December 2019 from 2pm until 3.30pm . Football memorabilia such as old programmes, photos and books will be on display and those who attend are welcome to bring along their own personal items to share and discuss. The sessions are free of charge and there is no requirement to book a place.
