Huge weekend ahead as Toon aim to stay top

Fri 01 Mar 2019

Ahead of Saturday’s match at home to Elgin, goalkeeper Greg Fleming says Peterhead are determined to stay top of League 2.

The Blue Toon won their game in hand on Edinburgh on Tuesday, defeating Cowdenbeath 1-0, to pull two points clear of the team from the capital.

Fleming was not tested against the Blue Brazil and he will hope for another quiet afternoon when Gavin Price’s side travel down from Borough Briggs.

The former Ayr Utd number one believes the fixture takes on huge signficance with title rivals Edinburgh and Clyde meeting at Broadwood.

Fleming said: “It was important to go top of the table and now we  need to try and kick on on Saturday.”

“Edinburgh play Clyde so one of those teams will drop points in that game and we need to make sure we look after our own match and try and beat Elgin.”

“Elgin are a good team and always give us a tough game so we know it will not be easy against them.”

Blue Toon boss Jim McInally: “We have got this massive game on Saturday, knowing there is a game elsewhere and they can cut each other up.”

“We are doing well with 18 wins already at this stage of the season and Clyde are 15 games unbeaten and remain third.”

“It shows you how well all three teams are doing and the title race will probably go right to the death.”
