Peterhead’s penalty disappointment sees Formartine progress

Peterhead 0-0 Formartine

(Formartine win 7-6 on pens)

Peterhead tumbled out of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup after Formartine edged a penalty shoot-out following a tepid goalless draw.

Gary Fraser and Cammy Eadie both missed from the spot as the Highland League side prevailed 7-6 at Balmoor.

There were few positives on the night for Jim McInally’s team, although Rory McAllister wasted a good chance early on when he shot wide from a precision Fraser pass.

Scott Lisle went close for the visitors in the 18th minute after a weaving run, which ended with a low drive that flashed inches off target.

Greg Fleming was then forced into a fine save in the 36th minute to deny Jordan Leyden, whose stinging shot was heading in.

The Blue Toon had already made their three subs by the time Jamie Stevenson went off with a hamstring injury so they had to play out the remaining 25 minutes with 10 men.

Yet the hosts should have won it in stoppage time when Kevin Main fumbled a tame Scott Brown effort and just when it looked like Jack Leitch would slot in the rebound, the away goalkeeper atoned by sprawling across his goal to turn the ball behind for a corner.
