Peterhead 2-1 Cove Rangers

An opening Betfred Cup win for Peterhead, who came from behind to defeat Cove Rangers thanks to goals from Derek Lyle and Rory McAllister.

The SPFL newcomers got off to the perfect start when Jamie Masson converted a 14th minute penalty, which was awarded after Jason Brown handled Mitch Megginson’s shot.

But the Blue Toon fought back well and restored parity just six minutes later.  Jack Leitch swung in a corner and Lyle’s downward header beat Stuart McKenzie.

McAllister thought he had scored in the 37th minute with a goalbound shot which was superbly cleared by Harry Milne but the Balmoor captain would not be denied two minutes later.

McAllister was floored by Darryn Kelly from Paddy Boyle’s cross and the striker coolly dispatched the spot-kick.

New Cove boss Paul Hartley will curse the crossbar that his men could not score in the second period, Milne striking the frame of the game with an inswinging cross.

The same player was denied again by the woodwork with a great effort following a neat one-two with Sam Burnett but Peterhead saw the game out to pick up three points in Group D.
