Cruel ending for Peterhead denies title triumph on home turf

Sat 27 Apr 2019

Peterhead 1-1 Stirling Albion

A cruel, crushing ending saw Peterhead concede in stoppage time to deny them the chance to win the League 2 title with a game to spare.

The Blue Toon were well on course to be crowned champions in front of their own fans.

Jack Leitch’s first half strike looked like being enough against a Stirling side that hardly had an effort on goal.

But the Binos levelled in the 93rd minute through substitute Peter Macdonald leaving the near 1,400 supporters inside Balmoor stunned and sickened.

It’s not over though. Far from it.  Peterhead do still have another opportunity to pick up the trophy against Queen’s Park at Hampden.

A draw, barring an incredibly high-scoring win for Clyde at Cowdenbeath, will still be enough and that needs to be remembered.

Yes, it would have been fitting to get the job done and party on home territory but the national stadium is not the worst second-best.

The Blue Toon faithful began to believe it was their day when Leitch scored eight minutes before half-time.

Cammy Thomson misplaced a pass and the ball fell the way of Leitch, who drove forward and after playing a neat one-two with Rory McAllister, he slotted past Callum Ferrie from eight yards.

Leitch was unlucky not to score again moments into the second half when, after a clipped pass from Jamie Stevenson, he spun in the box and shot just wide.

The biggest and best chance for a killer, title-winning second fell for substitute Shane Sutherland with 20 minutes left.  The forward had only just entered the pitch when he volleyed a Scott Brown cross over from very close range.

It was another sub who had the final say, Macdonald turning in a Darren Smith delivery just seconds before the referee blew up for full time.
