Peterhead moved ever closer to the League 2 title after winning an action-packed match at Elgin.

There was an own goal, a missed penalty and a red card as the Blue Toon picked up a huge three points in Moray.

With Clyde notching an emphatic 5-0 win over basement side Berwick, the gap remains four points but there are now just two games left and one more win will see the Blue Toon crowned champions.

The leaders got their noses in front after just two minutes, Callum Wilson putting through his own net from Ryan Dow’s corner.

In the 18th minute, the scores were level again when Greg Morrison headed Ross McIver’s cross beyond Greg Fleming.

Jack Leitch restored Peterhead’s lead in the 29th minute, neatly slotting past Kyle Gourlay from Rory McAllister’s set-up.

There was still time for more drama before the interval because the hosts were awarded a penalty in the 43rd minute after Morrison went down under Mick Dunlop’s challenge.

McIver failed from the spot though, courtesy of a fine Fleming stop, which preserved Peterhead’s advantage.

The Blue Toon had some opportunities to go further in front in the second half but rather than scoring again, it was vital they did not concede.

Sure enough, they kept the back door tightly shut although they were made to sweat until the final whistle after Dunlop was dismissed for picking up a second yellow card in the last minute.

On to next week, Peterhead know a win over Stirling Albion will get them over the line, regardless of Clyde’s result against Queen’s Park.
