PETERHEAD 2-1 COWDENBEATH

Three goals scored and three golden opportunities squandered.

That was the match summary as Peterhead dug out a nervy win over Cowdenbeath to maintain their five point advantage at the top.

Rory McAllister opened the scoring in the 27th minute after a long punt forward from Greg Fleming.  Dreadful defending was exposed by the Blue Toon captain, who got in behind the visiting backline to bury a shot past David McGurn.

How Jason Brown did not make it 2-0 moments later was hard to believe.  It was a header from just a few yards out, following a free-kick, which the 22 year old somehow sent wide.

Sure enough Cowden equalised through former Blue Toon man David Cox a minute before half time.  Jordan Allan provided the assist with a superb turn to get away from Paddy Boyle and his low cross was dispatched by the sliding Cox.

Peterhead regrouped at the interval and they went back in front six minutes into the second half.  Boyle crossed for Scott Brown and the midfielder sent a fine 10 yard header high into the net.

Had Ryan Dow not passed up a great chance in the 55th minute, Peterhead would have been comfortable.

Willie Gibson threaded a ball through for Dow and barring the assistant referee, everybody in the stadium, including Dow, seemed to think the flag was coming for offside.  It stayed down but the former Dundee Utd forward shot tentatively at McGurn and it stayed 2-1.

Cowdenbeath could have taken a point after blowing a gilt-edge chance in the closing stages.  Fraser Mullen’s free-kick was saved by the diving Fleming but Robbie Deas could not net the rebound, heading over from six yards.

Peterhead breathed a sigh of relief to stay clear of Edinburgh and their next opponents Clyde.
