For the second game in a row, League 2 leaders Peterhead fought back from a goal down to pick up all three ponts.

On Tuesday, Cowdenbeath were the victims.  Here, it was Annan Athletic.

There was not too much between the teams but the Blue Toon’s grit and determination made the difference.

Derek Lyle ended a 10-game goal drought to score the winner after Jack Leitch had wiped out Tony Wallace’s opener.

It kept the Balmoor team five points clear of Edinburgh, who had too miuch for Queen’s Park.

However, Clyde’s title challenge appears to have ended following their four point deduction for fielding an ineligible player coupled with their defeat at Elgin.

Peterhead’s target is just to keep winning and their victory over Annan was their sixth on the bounce.

They did it the hard way though after falling behind in the 21st minute.  Wallace sprinted clear following a lapse from Paddy Boyle and when his initial effort came back to him, the forward stroked in from eight yards.

Neither Greg Fleming or Jason Brown were decisive for the goal but Peterhead recovered well and needed just four minutes to muster a reply.  Shane Sutherland cut the ball back for Leitch and the former Airdrie midfielder rifled a low shot from the edge of the penalty area into the net.

Jim McInally’s team shaded the second half as Sutherland fired wide from an angle before Scott Brown sclaffed off target from 12 yards.

Aidan Smith headed wide for Annan, who picked up an awards double for February with Peter Murphy and Chris Johnston winning the manager and player prizes respectively.

But Peterhead came up with the winner in the 71st minute.  Willie Gibson’s corner was met on the volley by Lyle and after his effort was parried by Aidan McAdams, the 38 year old reacted quickest to prod in the rebound.
