Peterhead racked up their third 1-0 win in a week by seeing off Elgin City to open up a four point gap at the top of League 2.

Paddy Boyle was the unlikely matchwinner, the left-back scoring early on to claim his first goal for the club.

The former Airdrie player finished neatly from 16 yards after Rory McAllister pickpocketed Jordan Lowdown to provide the assist.

Derek Lyle could have made it 2-0 after a fine passage of play, which saw Ryan Dow neatly flick the ball into his path from Scott Brown’s centre.

But Elgin should have been level just before half time, Ross MacIver breaking through on goal only to be denied by a fine Greg Fleming save.

That was Peterhead’s only real scare and they went on to see out the second half untroubled.

The visiting goalkeeper Kyle Gourlay did make a couple of impressive saves to keep his team alive in the contest, Jamie Stevenson and Scott Brown both denied for the hosts.

Peterhead’s victory, coupled with Clyde’s win over Edinburgh, meant they extended their advantage at the top of the table.
