Peterhead go top with well-deserved Cowdenbeath win

Tue 26 Feb 2019

A dominant display saw Peterhead notch a fully-deserved win against Cowdenbeath to replace Edinburgh City as League 2 leaders.

Just one goal separated the teams - Scott Brown’s strike just before half-time - but the Blue Toon could have had a hatful had they been more ruthless.

Regardless, the scoreline was enough to hoist the Buchan team to the summit and it is there where they will be determined to stay in the final third of the season.

Following their 1-0 win at Stirling on Saturday, Peterhead made one change as Willie Gibson dropped to the bench to make way for Jack Leitch.

Shane Sutherland saw an early header hacked off the line by Luc Bollan before the former Elgin man thundered over from 10 yards midway through the half.

Brown forced Aaron Lennox into a smart save with a volley, which kicked up off the turf, but Cowden were unable to get the interval level as Peterhead finally made their dominance count in the 43rd minute.

Rory McAllister found Brown in the box and the former St Johnstone midfielder slid a six yard effort into the roof of the net via a flick off Robbie Deas.

It was scrappy and not in-keeping with Peterhead’s impressive play, which continued in the second half.

Chances continued to flow and the visitors were bizarrely aided by Leitch when the ball hit his body on the line to stop a goalbound effort from substitute Derek Lyle, who also flashed a header wide,

Ryan Dow then nodded wide from inside the six yard box in the 75th minute but while the Blue Toon lacked a killer instinct, they saw out the game with minimal fuss to move two points clear at the top.
