Peterhead gained ground at the top end of League 2 with a vital victory over Queen’s Park at Balmoor.

Strikes from Shane Sutherland and Willie Gibson gave the Blue Toon the win, which moved them one point behind leaders Edinburgh City.

Sutherland, back at the club and back in the goals, reopened his account in the third minute.

It was all about a good first touch after a fine clipped ball from Jason Brown, which allowed the former Elgin attacker to shoot past Jordan Hart from six yards.

In the 14th minute, Jack Leitch attempted an overhead kick, which went narrowly wide, after unconvincing goalkeeping from Hart and then Sutherland tested the visiting number one from Derek Lyle’s pick-out.

It all seemed to be going to plan but the stubborn Spiders clung on and after an even end to the first half, they got back level four minutes after the interval.

A corner broke into the path of Calvin McCrory and after his 14 yard shot flashed through a ruck of bodies, Scott Gibson scrambled home from close in.

Peterhead’s own Gibson came up with the decisive strike though in the 55th minute to pile the pressure on Edinburgh.

Stevenson’s corner was only partially cleared and Gibson, on at half-time for the injured Leitch, thundered a low 22 yard drive into the bottom corner of the net.
