Table-topping clash throws up drab draw

Sat 09 Feb 2019

Occasionally you get a decent 0-0 draw but this Balmoor stalemate certainly was not one of them.

Peterhead and Edinburgh City played out a drab encounter to leave the top of League 2 unchanged.

Perhaps the windy conditions contributed to the poor spectacle, or even nerves given the significance of the fixture.

But neither manager offered any excuses post-match for the lacklustre 90 minutes, which failed to produce a serious attempt on target.

The Blue Toon actually started with intent and Jack Leitch might have done better with a 14 yard shot, which he dragged off target.

The one big chance fell the way of the visitors in the 23rd minute when Jack Breen screwed wide from 10 yards with just the goalkeeper to beat after the on-loan Hamilton rookie ran on to Scott Shepherd’s knockdown.

Breen then went down under a challenge from Jason Brown just before half-time but there did not appear to be enough contact to award a penalty.

In the second period, Shane Sutherland, back in blue after his return from Elgin last month, saw a 25 yard chip narrowly clear the crossbar.

But 0-0 was in the script long before referee Mike Roncone blew up for full-time.

The result means Peterhead remain four points adrift but with two Cowdenbeath games in hand.
