Peterhead showed patience to break Berwick’s resistance in a significant victory, which saw them replace Edinburgh as League 2 leaders.

It looked like being a frustrating afternoon for the Blue Toon but they eventually got the goals their play deserved.

Key to the win was substitute Rory McAllister, who made the breakthrough with a fine 72nd minute free-kick before assisting Jack Leitch in stoppage time.

Greg Fleming also had a role to play, making two big saves in the first six minutes to keep out Craig Hume’s header and then spreading himself well to thwart Daryl Healy, who was through on goal.

The woodwork came to Berwick’s rescue in the 16th minute, Leitch’s downward header bouncing up off the turf and striking the crossbar from Jason Brown’s centre.

There were one or two other chances for the home team prior to the interval but they stepped it up in the second half after McAllister took the place of Cammy Eadie.

Derek Lyle wasted a golden opportunity in the 61st minute when he somehow sent a close-range header over the crossbar after excellent wing work from Ryan Dow.

But the deadlock was broken after McAllister won and scored a free-kick on the angle 25 yards out.  McAllister, managing a back problem, struck his effort up and over the wall and the ball flew past the helpless Kyle Allison.

More openings were passed up by Jim McInally’s men in the closing stages but they sealed the points with seconds remaining to go above Edinburgh on goal difference.

McAllister darted into the box after cutting in from the left flank and he rolled in Leitch, who slotted into the bottom corner from eight yards.
