Ruthless Blue Toon hit four past Stirling

PETERHEAD 4-1 STIRLING ALBION

An efficient Peterhead kept up their League 2 title tilt by sweeping aside Stirling Albion, whose five game unbeaten run was abruptly ended at Balmoor.

Two goals in each half saw the Blue Toon run out comfortable winners in what was a solid rather than spectacular display.

The scoring began in the 14th minute through an excellent Jack Leitch effort, the midfielder controlling the ball with a neat touch and then rifling a volley beyond Cameron Binnie from just inside the box.

Equally impressive was Rory McAllister’s goal in the 28th minute as the striker rounded the goalkeeper and from a really tight angle, found the opposite corner with a precision finish.

In between those two strikes was a gilt-edged chance for Stirling’s Darren Smith, who somehow slid a close-range shot wide after a fine Dylan Mackin cross.

Jamie Stevenson then provided a couple of assists in the second half to seal the points for the hosts.

His 55th minute corner found the unmarked Derek Lyle but the veteran forward still had an awful lot to do as he superbly looped a header inside the far post.

Stevenson’s next set-piece, in the 63rd minute, was nodded goalward by Cammy Eadie  and although the visiting defence thought they had cleared, the referee ruled the ball had already crossed the line.

Ronan Hughes turned in a Reg McLaren cross with two minutes left but that just a mere consolation for Stirling.
