Peterhead remain second in League 2 after scoring late to defeat Annan at Balmoor.

The Blue Toon got off to the perfect start thanks to Derek Lyle’s goal after just two minutes.

But when the Galabankies levelled from the spot in the 81st minute, a draw looked on the cards.

Russell McLean had other ideas though, firing in the winner with five minutes left to keep Peterhead two points behind leaders Edinburgh.

The capital club show no signs of slipping up but Jim McInally’s men don’t either and they moved on to 10 league victories from 13 matches.

Paddy Boyle was the creator of Peterhead’s opener, finding Lyle who netted from close range.

But despite their fast start, the game was still in the balance going into the closing stages and when Max Wright won, what appeared to be, a soft penalty following Jason Brown’s foul, Tony Wallace converted to level the scores.

McLean had the final say, however, smashing a rising shot from inside the penalty box beyond Alex Mitchell to hand the home team a vital three points.
