Peterhead exit Scottish Cup after Ton treble

Peterhead 0

Morton 3

Peterhead had reason to be hopeful in the Scottish Cup after taking Morton back to Balmoor.

But two games in four days against the Championship side proved too much for the Blue Toon.

Following a 1-1 draw at Cappielow, Morton meant business second time around  and they needed just 10 minutes to take the lead.

Peterhead could not defend Michael Tidser’s corner and Kerr Waddell sent a header past Greg Fleming.

Jim McInally, looking to dump his old side out of the famous knock-out competition, must have been encouraged when Jason Brown forced a save out of Derek Gaston nine minutes into the second half.

But Robert Thomson’s strike in the 61st minute put Morton firmly in control of the tie.

The former Brechin frontman buried a shot into the bottom corner after being set up by Bob McHugh, Ton’s scorer in Saturday’s tie.

Blue Toon striker Russell McLean was unlucky with a 71st minute effort, which rebounded off the post.

Had the ball go in, it would have set up a nervy ending for the visitors, who instead added a third with seven minutes remaining.

Chris Millar smashed a shot, from a difficult angle, into the net to confirm Morton’s fourth round tie against East Fife.
