Peterhead are the new League 2 leaders after beating basement side Albion Rovers in a game of two halves at windswept Balmoor.

Derek Lyle kept up his excellent recent form to grab the two goals, which proved just enough.

The Blue Toon impressed in the first half while Albion were in disarray but the visitors got their act together after the interval and reduced the deficit.

The home side needed Greg Fleming to make some important saves to preserve their lead but they held on to move above Edinburgh, who were beaten by Clyde.

Paddy Boyle picked up an injury in the warm-up but the late change to the starting line-up did not hinder Peterhead, who began positively.

Rory McAllister, literally straight from the kick-off, fired inches over with a cheeky effort from the centre spot.

In fact, it was an indication of how strong the overhead conditions were that Albion’s John Cunningham tried the exact same thing at the start of the second period and his 50 yarder was tipped over by Fleming.

But McAllister was the key man before the break, laying on both goals for Lyle.

The opener arrived in the fifth minute when the Blue Toon captain chased a long punt forward and then clipped the ball across for his striker partner Lyle to shoot past Peter Morrison.

Morrison had a fine game but it was his lapse, which brought about Peterhead’s second.

The goalkeeper’s misplaced pass was seized upon by McAllister, who squared for Lyle to slot in his fifth goal from his last three appearances.

Some neat combination play in the 21st minute nearly produced a third but Ryan Dow was denied by Morrison and countless other chances went awry.

You still sensed two goals would be enough but Albion were a different proposition in the second half.

They carried a threat and had Peterhead on the back foot, although McAllister could have settled the contest with a breakaway in the 64th minute.  Instead, he took a bad touch and ended up shooting wide of the target.

Albion set up a nervy ending by scoring in the 71st minute from a set-piece, Barry Eley heading in Gerard Hernando Escuriola’s corner at the front post.

Fleming saved well from Jamie Watson’s 22 yard free-kick with five minutes left as Peterhead stood firm to go top of the table.
