Jim McInally will take Peterhead to face his former club Morton in the Scottish Cup third round.

It follows the Blue Toon’s victory over Kelty Hearts, who put on a decent display at Balmoor.

Russell McLean, Rory McAllister and substitute Derek Lyle got the goals but the home team had to work for their win.

Kelty announced Barry Ferguson as their new manager on Thursday and although the former Rangers and Scotland captain was not in the away dugout, the Lowland League leaders looked eager to impress.

That said, the tie did not start well for them as Conrad Courts misplaced a seventh minute pass and McLean pounced to slot past Scott Christie.

Peterhead were unable to build on their lead though, and they let the visitors back into the contest in the 20th minute.

Stephen Husband whipped in a free-kick from the left and Ciaren Chalmers buried a header past Greg Fleming.

McInally’s men were better in the second half and created several chances but it looked like it would not be McAllister’s day when he had a header chalked off for offside before striking the upright.

However, McAllister would not be denied in the 74th minute as Peterhead regained the initiative.

The Blue Toon captain laid the ball off to Lyle, who clipped a fine cross to the back post and McAllister nodded past Christie from a few yards out.

Lyle then headed in Peterhead’s third in the last minute, directing Jamie Stevenson’s corner into the net from the centre of the box.

Although the contest was now over, the scoring was not as Kelty pulled one back in stoppage time through Matthew Gay from another Husband set-piece but it was too little too late for the ambitious Fife club.
