A quality goal separated the sides as Bohemians advanced to the IRN-BRU Cup third round at the expense of Peterhead.

Kevin Devaney bent in a beauty in the second half but the Blue Toon were unlucky to go out after Jason Brown rattled the woodwork in stoppage time.

Away from the hustle and bustle of League 2 action, Peterhead participated in a good spectacle with both teams eager to keep the ball on the floor.

Patience was the key in a first half, which yielded one big chance for Bohs in the 38th minute.

Eoghan Stokes turned smartly in the box and hit a rising shot, which was pushed behind for a corner by Greg Fleming.

The Blue Toon began brightly after the interval and Jamie Stevenson lofted a ball over the top for Willie Gibson, who fired straight at Colin McCabe.

But the decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute after a slick move.

Andrew Lyons found Stokes and his lay-off was delightfully curled in with the ouside of Devaney’s boot from 18 yards.

The 53 visiting fans were happy and Robbie McCourt could have given the Dubliners a cushion when he rounded Fleming in the 70th minute but he was unable to direct his effort on target from a tight angle.

As Peterhead pushed men forward in the closing stages, they were left exposed at the back and Ryan Graydon could have killed the contest when he was through on goal, only to be foiled by Fleming.

Peterhead were denied the chance of a penalty shoot-out right at the death when Brown struck the crossbar.

Gibson’s inswinging cross was knocked down by substitute Russell McLean and just when Jack Leitch was away to strike the ball with his left foot, Brown nipped in and saw his effort smash the frame of the goal.

Very unfortunate or luck of the Irish?
