Well-organised Blue Toon get better of Clyde

Sat 18 Aug 2018

The forwards of Peterhead and Clyde could well top the scoring charts by the end of the season.

But it was the Blue Toon’s attackers, who ultimately made the difference in this League 2 contest.

Early in the second half, Derek Lyle set up Rory McAllister, who netted the game’s only goal as Russell McLean put in another tireless shift.

Clyde’s front two, meanwhile, of David Goodwillie and Ally Love were kept quiet throughout.

Jim McInally’s team shaded the first half in which McLean went closest after a surging run from Simon Ferry’s searching pass.

Scott Brown then flashed a shot over the crossbar just before the Blue Toon made the decisive breakthrough in the 53rd minute.

Lyle took a touch and lofted the ball over the Clyde centre backs for the onrushing McAllister.  The Blue Toon striker stayed cool and slipped the ball past Blair Currie from 10 yards.

Lyle could have doubled Peterhead’s lead midway through the half after good work from Jamie Stevenson.  Lyle was picked out on the left side of the box but he spooned his effort wide.

Clyde’s best chance, in the 67th minute, saw Raymond Grant forcing a save out of Greg Fleming, with Chris McStay unable to divert the rebound on target.

Peterhead were worthy winners though, to go top of the table above Annan and Elgin on goal difference.
