IRN-BRU Cup 1st Round

Peterhead 2

Brechin 1

An entertaining IRN-BRU Cup tie went the way of Peterhead, who fought back well to defy Brechin and book their place in the second round.

The Blue Toon impressed in a dominant first half display, yet still trailed after a bad error from Jason Brown.

Even though the visitors quietened Jim McInally’s men after the interval, the home team still carried a threat and they scored twice in the latter stages.

Russell McLean tapped in from close range in the 76th minute and with penalty kicks looming, Jack Leitch headed in the winner with four minutes left.

One of the star men was Patrick O’Neil, who pulled off a string of key saves in the first half to thwart Peterhead.

McLean was twice denied, as was Ross Kavanagh, and Brechin must have started to think it was going to be their night, especially when they were gifted the opener in the 13th minute.

Brown made a mess of dealing with a high ball and Dene Shields took full advantage to slot past Greg Fleming.

In the second period, there were a couple of Brechin breakaways, which forced Fleming into action but the introduction of Rory McAllister and Derek Lyle ensured a torrid ending for the Angus club.

Neither striker got on the scoresheet but they caused problems and the other forward, McLean, was a nuisance throughout.

The big striker levelled from close range when Leitch sent over a telling delivery from the left and the compliment was returned in the 86th minute minute as McLean stood up a cross for Leitch to nod in from a couple of yards out.
