Peterhead hit back but forced to settle for Queen’s Park draw

Peterhead 1

Queen’s Park 1

A goal apiece and a point apiece, Peterhead and Queen’s Park played out a fair draw in their League 2 opener at Balmoor.

The first half threw up chances and drama whereas the second period was bland and the outcome was predictable long before 4.45pm.

After failing to find the net in any of their Betfred Cup group games, the Blue Toon started with a bold three-pronged attack but, despite Rory McAllister ending their scoring drought, the frontline had an unbalanced look.

Jim McInally’s team did, however, respond well to the early setback of conceding from a set-piece in the seventh minute.  Jamie McKernon’s corner found the unmarked Scott Gibson and the defender hooked an effort inside the far post.

Forwards Derek Lyle and Smart Osadolor traded half chances at either end before Scott Brown blew a great opportunity for Peterhead in the 15th minute, blasting over from 12 yards after Lyle’s cross was not properly cleared by the visiting defence.

The Blue Toon were back level in the 25th minute through the alertness of McAllister.  Jamie Stevenson’s 22 yard drive was beaten out by Jordan Hart, who might have done better, and McAllister was on hand to sweep in the rebound.

The match fizzled out quickly from there, although there was a good opportunity for Queen’s Park to take maximum points with five minutes remaining.

A misplaced pass from home goalkeeper Greg Fleming landed at the feet of Kurtis Roberts but his attempted lob over the Blue Toon number one, from an angle, went wide of the unguarded goal.
