BETFRED CUP GROUP D

PETERHEAD 0

STIRLING ALBION 2

A goal in each half gave Stirling Albion their first win in the Betfred Cup as Peterhead exited the competition in disappointing fashion.

The Binos front two of Peter MacDonald and Mark Stewart were the star performers and the men, who made the difference at Balmoor.

MacDonald opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a tidy finish inside the far corner from Stewart’s clever cutback.

Several chances came and went for the Blue Toon before Stewart added to the visitors’ lead in the 71st minute, the former Falkirk man smashing a rising shot beyond Greg Fleming from Jordan Allan’s corner.

The result means Jim McInally’s men, who have yet to find the net, cannot get out of Group D going into their last round-robin game against Dundee, which will be merely a fitness-exercise.

Summer signing Derek Lyle is one player, who will benefit from some more minutes on the pitch.

The former Queen of the South finisher is still trying to find full fitness after a calf strain restricted his pre-season.

The 37 year old was introduced from the bench in the second half and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.

Lyle’s new shirt number is 99.  Here, however, the red balloons belonged to Stirling Albion.
