Battling Blue Toon defeated at Dunfermline

Tue 17 Jul 2018

Dunfermline 3–0 Peterhead

Goals near the end of both halves proved costly for Peterhead as Dunfermline registered an opening victory in the Betfred Cup.

Myles Hippolyte broke the deadlock just before half time but the Blue Toon were still very much in the contest until Kallum Higginbotham converted a late penalty and substitute Andy Ryan wrapped up the home win in stoppage time.

Peterhead, after picking up two points at Brechin last weekend, made a couple of changes with Simon Ferry and Callum Home replacing Aaron Norris and Ross Kavanagh, who both dropped down to the bench.

Hippolyte headed in a close range opener in the 42nd minute, after getting on the end of Ryan Williamson’s cross.

Rory McAllister was unfortunate not to haul Peterhead level when he struck the woodwork with a well-taken free-kick early in the second period.

There was still hope for the visitors up until Willie Gibson upended substitute Aidan Connolly, which allowed Higginbotham to neatly dispatch from the spot.

A breakaway goal from Ryan, who clipped the ball inside the far corner with seconds left, completed the win.

Peterhead competed well but remain on two points in Group D ahead of home matches against Stirling Albion and Dundee respectively.
