Peterhead’s title hopes kept alive by Jordon’s header

A fourth straight win saw patient Peterhead overcome basement side Cowdenbeath to keep up the chase on title rivals Montrose.

A fine header from substitute Jordon Brown was all it took but it was no more than the Blue Toon deserved.

Prior to the midfielder’s 80th minute goal, Cowden keeper David McGurn had done superbly to keep the scores level with a string of saves, particularly in the first half.

McGurn made a couple of early stops to thwart Allan Smith and then the follow-up effort from Jack Leitch.

Rory McAllister was also denied on two occasions as McGurn threatened to spoil Peterhead’s afternoon.

WIllie Gibson and Simon Ferry continued to dictate the play after the interval, which restricted the visitors’ ability to get up the pitch.

When Jason Brown failed to keep down a close-range 70th minute header, Cowdenbeath must have started to believe it might just be their day.

But Peterhead kept at it and they were rewarded with a quality goal.

Gibson delivered a telling cross from the right and Brown rose to send a bullet header beyond McGurn.

Gary Bollan’s side did have a big chance to level with four minutes remaining but Blair Malcolm was unable to keep his composure with a 12 yard shot, which he wildly blazed over.

The result condemned Cowden to the pyramid play-offs for the second season in a row.

Peterhead’s campaign might yet be extended into May as well but at least if that does happen, unlike the last two years, they will carry momentum and be confident of finishing on a high.
