BERWICK RANGERS 1-3 PETERHEAD

Two more goals from Russell McLean helped Peterhead beat Berwick at Shielfield Park to stay ahead of Montrose on goal difference.

McLean scored in each half while Jason Brown also got on the scoresheet as the Blue Toon won their third game on the trot.

McLean, who netted a double against Clyde last weekend, opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a close-range effort from Jack Leitch’s assist, not long after David McCracken had seen a header superbly saved by Robby McCrorie.

Jim McInally’s men doubled their lead two minutes before the break when Brown got on the end of Willie Gibson’s corner to send a rising effort into the net.

McLean’s second and Peterhead’s third in the 65th minute effectively wrapped up the points, the big striker stroking in the rebound after McCrorie had done well initially to keep the ball out.

There was a consolation goal for Berwick, Jack Hamilton smashing a shot beyond Greg Fleming with 12 minutes remaining but this was another fine away day for Peterhead, their 13th win on the road this season.

They stay just ahead of Montrose, who managed a 5-0 win at Stirling ahead of playing their game in hand at Cowdenbeath this Tuesday.
