Peterhead’s League 2 title hopes suffered a jolt after they were beaten by Stenhousemuir, which allowed Montrose to go back level with the Blue Toon at the top of the table courtesy of their win over Annan.

Jim McInally’s men just never got going and the Balmoor manager later admitted the scoreline actually flattered his own team such was their lacklustre performance.

Stenny totally dominated the first half and Greg Fleming had to make a fine save in the seventh minute to deny Mark McGuigan, who broke the offside trap to break through on goal.

However, McGuigan was in no mood to spurn another chance and he gave the visitors the lead in the 17th minute, latching on to Harry Paton’s pass and rounding Fleming before slotting into an empty net.

It was not a great surprise when the Warriors went further ahead in the 31st minute. Ross Meechan’s thrown-in somehow found its way to the far post for Colin McMenamin, who smashed in a shot from 10 yards.

The Blue Toon struggled to create chances although Scott Brown did test Lewis McMinn with a 20 yard drive early in the second period before substitute Chris Johnston blazed over in the 73rd minute after a surging run.

With 10 minutes remaining, Rory McAllister gave the hosts hope with a sumptuous free-kick, curling a 20 yard effort into the top corner after he was brought down by Ross Dunlop, but Stenny held on to stay fourth.
