Sat 24 Feb 2018

COWDENBEATH 0-2 PETERHEAD

A goal in each half gave Peterhead victory at bottom of the table Cowdenbeath as the Blue Toon reduced Montrose’s lead to three points.

Russell McLean kept up his good form by opening the scoring and trialist Karim Belmokhtar sealed the points in the dying embers.

McLean, who netted a hat-trick at Annan on Tuesday, made the breakthrough in the 18th minute, heading past David McGurn from WIllie Gibson’s centre.

The former East Kilbride forward went close again with an effort from inside the penalty area after Jamie Stevenson fired wide in the 31st minute.

Bradley Smith smashed a shot over the crossbar for Cowdenbeath midway through the second half before Peterhead lost full-back Aidan McIlduff to injury.

Mason Robertson nearly made sure of the win with a header, which flashed wide following a set-piece.

However, French-Algerian striker Belmokhtar put the match out of Cowdenbeath’s reach deep in stoppage time with a close-range after a cross from fellow substitute Aaron Norris.

The victory, coupled with Montrose’s 2-2 draw at Berwick, gives Peterhead the chance to go top of League 2 on goal difference with a win over Clyde at Balmoor on Tuesday.
