Russell McLean’s impressive hat-trick was not enough to give Peterhead victory after Annan scored twice in the closing stages to earn a draw in an entertaining encounter at Galabank.

Rory McAllister went off injured in the first half but McLean grasped his opportunity and scored within seconds of coming on.

McLean found the bottom corner with a shot from inside the penalty area to give the Blue Toon a 30th minute lead.

The big striker then sent a header just over moments later, but he was on target again in the 35th minute with a low drive from Scott Brown’s pass.

There was hope for Annan when Blair Henderson pulled one back in the 64th minute with a close-range diving header from Rabin Omar’s cross.

However, McLean restored Peterhead’s two-goal cushion from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute after James Creaney was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

But the hosts would not lie down and Henderson got his second of the night with an immediate reply to set up a nervy ending.

Peterhead, looking to cut Montrose’s lead to three points, were unable to hold out as Peter Watson headed in the equaliser with six minutes remaining to round off a high-scoring contest.
