Peterhead held by Berwick in tale of two penalties

Peterhead came from behind against a battling Berwick but this was two points dropped rather than one gained in their League 2 title push.

It was a tale of two penalties and not too much else as the Blue Toon’s sticky patch continued.

There were some openings for Jim McInally’s team in the first half but they failed to convert meaning they trailed at the interval.

Rory McAllister levelled with 14 minutes remaining but it was an opportunity missed to make up ground on leaders Montrose, who shared four goals with Elgin.

Allan Smith had a chance to give Peterhead an eighth minute lead with a 12 yard shot, which was beaten away by Robby McCrorie.

Then in the 21st minute, McAllister, after cutting in from the left, stung the palms of McCrorie and Jordon Brown failed to direct the rebound on target.

There was a scare for the hosts soon after when Ousmane See was sent through on goal but Greg Fleming was able to force the striker wide after racing off his line allowing Blue Toon bodies to get back and cover.

McAllister ought to have given Peterhead the lead on the half hour after latching on to a sublime Simon Ferry pass but the striker could not beat McCrorie, who spread himself to make a fine save.

The visitors did carry a threat going forward and they went in front in the 33rd minute after See was chopped down by Aidan McIlduff. Fleming dived to his right to save Paul Willis’ spot-kick but Steven Thomson slotted in the rebound.

There was almost an instant Peterhead reply when Jordon Brown struck the crossbar with a sidefoot volley from six yards after good work from McAllister.

After the break, on loan Dumbarton winger Chris Johnston tested McCrorie with a shot from just inside the box but the goalkeeper was seldom called upon as the clock began to tick down.

McCrory was well protected by the Berwick backline, although a clumsy challenge from Robert Wilson gave Peterhead the chance to equalise in the 76th minute.

Mason Robertson whipped in a teasing cross and Wilson wrestled substitute Russell McLean to the ground, allowing McAllister to tuck away the penalty.

Youngsters Aaron Norris and Scott Adams were both introduced from the bench, with Norris delivering a couple of dangerous deliveries, but Berwick held on to collect their fourth point from Balmoor this season.
