Peterhead recovered from a Berwick fightback to claim a narrow win at Shielfield Park and move back to within a point of League 2 leaders Montrose.

The Blue Toon built up a two-goal lead thanks to David McCracken’s header and Rory McAllister’s penalty.

But the home team replied just before half time and early in the second half, the game was back in the balance.

However, Jack Leitch restored the Buchan men’s advantage with a strike, which proved to be the winner.

It was exactly the response boss Jim McInally had hoped for after his side’s defeat to Clyde at the weekend.

Skipper McCracken opened the scoring on the quarter hour mark, nodding in Willie Gibson’s delivery.

McAllister converted a spot-kick in the 41st minute to put Peterhead in command after Jordon Brown, who replaced the injured Jamie Stevenson, was fouled by Steven Notman.

Berwick battled back though and two minutes before the interval, Livingston loanee Jack Hamilton drove a shot beyond Greg Fleming into the bottom corner.

Robbie Horn’s team then drew level in the 52nd minute, Ousman See collecting a Gary Phillips pass and drilling a shot from inside the box into the net.

That could have set Peterhead back but to their credit they regrouped and came up with the decisive goal in the 71st minute.

McAllister was the provider as Leitch tucked the ball home from close range to turn the heat up on Montrose, who visit Balmoor on Saturday.
