PETERHEAD 7-0 ELGIN CITY

A stunning second half display saw Peterhead rip Elgin apart and start the New Year with a resounding bang.

The Blue Toon took a slender one goal lead into the interval but the Borough Briggs team completely imploded after the break as Jim McInally’s men added six more.

Rory McAllister began the rout from a 27th minute free-kick but it was not until Jordon Brown netted in the 54th minute that the floodgates opened.

Substitute Nicky Riley added a third in the 65th minute before Jamie Stevenson flighted in a free-kick six minutes later.

Stevenson scored again in the 76th minute and then Mason Robertson claimed Peterhead’s sixth in the 84th minute.

Russell McLean, who came off the bench, tapped in with three minutes remaining to round off Elgin’s misery.

The emphatic home victory came just days after the Blue Toon hit League 2 title rivals Montrose for six at Links Park.

With Montrose forced to settle for a draw against Cowdenbeath, it means Peterhead, who still have two games in hand, have managed to whittle down the Gable Endies’ advantage at the top to just a point.
