Relentless Peterhead turned on the style to register an emphatic win at League 2 title rivals Montrose, who saw their 10-match unbeaten run abruptly ended.

In front of a crowd of just under 1,000, the Blue Toon took a lead into the interval thanks to Jason Brown’s double and Jim McInally’s men scored four more goals in the second half.

Brown headed the visitors in front in the fifth minute and he was on hand from six yards to slam home his and Peterhead’s second in the 17th minute.

Montrose could have fallen further behind before they gave themselves a lifeline in the 41st minute, Sean Dillon nodding in an Iain Campbell corner to reduce the deficit.

However, Stewart Petrie’s team failed to exert any more pressure on Peterhead, who scored twice in quick succession early in the second half to effectively kill the contest.

The second period was barely a couple of minutes old when Allan Smith netted with a close-range finish and that was followed by Mason Robertson’s goal five minutes later.

Willie Gibson then got in on the scoring act with a well-taken 58th minute free-kick before a delightful Rory McAllister volley from Jamie Stevenson’s 69th minute pick-out made it six.

Shellshocked Montrose just wanted to hear the final whistle, although Kerr Hay did manage a consolation strike for the Gable Endies with 15 minutes remaining.

Aaron Norris was then introduced from the bench for his maiden Peterhead appearance as the Balmoor team moved to within three points of their opponents and still with two games in hand.
