Red-hot Rory McAllister was on the scoresheet again as Peterhead defeated League 2 title rivals Stirling Albion to climb to the top of the table.

McAllister, Scotland’s leading marksman for the season so far, notched four minutes before half time with a deflected effort, which proved decisive.

Victory at Forthbank saw the Blue Toon leapfrog the Binos and edge above Montrose on goal difference.

Jim McInally’s team began brightly and Mason Robertson sent an early header wide of the target before McAllister did likewise soon after.

Stirling survived a scare in the 26th minute when Jack Leitch prodded towards goal but the home defence managed to scramble the ball off the line.

The Blue Toon, however, made the breakthrough in the 41st minute as McAllister claimed his 14th goal from his last eight outings .

The striker’s shot from the corner of the penalty area hit a home defender and the ball looped up and over goalkeeper Cammy Binnie for his 21st goal of the campaign.

Jason Brown was denied by the woodwork in the 52nd minute, the big defender rattling the crossbar with a header from Willie Gibson’s corner.

Stirling’s hopes of finding an equaliser were hindered by the dismissal of Andy Black with 15 minutes remaining. The midfielder was red carded for a high tackle on Gibson.

Substitute Jordon Brown saw a header saved as the match entered the latter stages but one goal was enough for Peterhead to lead the table for the first time this season.
