Blue Toon suffer Berwick beating at Balmoor

Peterhead did not wear their traditional blue shirts against Berwick and they were certainly off colour as the Borderers claimed the points at Balmoor.

It was flat from both teams for most of the match, although the Blue Toon did look likeliest to make the breakthrough.

However, conceding a 74th minute goal from a set-play for the second home game in a row did not amuse boss Jim McInally, whose team then shipped a killer second in the closing stages.

Barring a double save from Greg Fleming in the 29th minute to deny Aaron Murrell, there was not too much for Peterhead to be concerned about.

In fact, the hosts were denied an interval lead by the woodwork as Mason Robertson rattled the crossbar with an eight yard header from Willie Gibson's cross three minutes before the break.

The match was still deadlocked after an incredible miss from Blue Toon midfielder Jack Leitch on the hour mark. Jamie Stevenson played in the surging Aidan McIlduff, who rolled the ball across goal for Leitch but from just two yards out, the former Airdrie player somehow spooned the ball over the crossbar.

It was a real shocker but as Peterhead began to probe, there was a sense that the Berwick backline could be breached..

Stevenson drew a great save from Bobby McCrorie when he collected a Gibson pass and curled a left foot shot, which was sneaking inside the far corner until the visiting goalkeeper superbly tipped the ball behind for a corner.

Berwick boss Robbie Horn, who played in an infamous 9-2 drubbing at Balmoor in 2008, would probably have accepted a point as the clock began to tick down.

However, his team went ahead from a free-kick, which the hosts failed to deal with. Chris McDonald clipped the ball into the box and Oliver Fleming took advantage of slackness from Scott Brown to prod in from close range at the far post.

The Black & Golds made sure of the points with seven minutes remaining as Peterhead, pushing for a leveller, were caught on the break from their own corner and Michael McKenna rounded Fleming before steering his shot in off the underside of the crossbar.
