Youngsters on scoresheet as Peterhead knock out East Fife

Tue 15 Aug 2017

Marc Lawrence and Scott Adams scored their first goals for Peterhead, who progressed to the second round of the IRN-BRU Cup with a fine win away to East Fife.

Teenager Lawrence gave the Blue Toon the perfect start with a close range finish early on and fellow youngster Adams doubled their advantage in the second half.

From there, the 2015/16 finalists safely saw the match out to book their place in Thursday's draw.

Balmoor boss Jim McInally took the opportunity to freshen up his team with Mikael Ngango Dikobo making his debut.

Fraser Hobday, Samson Gabriel and Russell McLean were also handed starts, along with Lawrence and Adams.

The visitors needed just two minutes to go in front, Lawrence prodding in from a few yards out after an error from Fifers keeper Tom Cordery.

Just after the half hour, Darren Young's side thought they had levelled when Scott Linton cracked a shot, which beat Hobday but the ball came back off the upright.

Allan Smith, who netted his first Peterhead goal in the League 2 win against Elgin on Saturday, was nearly celebrating again in the 59th minute but he was unable to direct his header on target.

However, Adsms gave the Blue Toon a two-goal cushion in the 63rd minute, the 20 year old midfielder cashing in on slack defending to find the back of the net.

Experienced heads Willie Gibson and Rory McAllister were then introduced from the bench as Peterhead held firm to defeat the Methil men for the second time in a month, following their Betfred Cup win.
