Fine win at Elgin but Blue Toon set to come up just short

Sat 29 Jul 2017

Peterhead were convincing winners at Elgin but, barring an incredible scoreline in the Dundee derby at Dens Park tomorrow, they will exit the Betfred Cup.

Harsh on the Blue Toon, who finished above Hearts, the team they impressively defeated on Tuesday night.

It's ironic that last year, Jim McInally's men topped their section on eight points.  This year, their nine point haul will not even be good enough to secure one of the best runners-up spots.

Peterhead are, as things stand, the fifth-best second placed team from the eight different groups.

Therefore, only a Dundee Utd win by six goals, or a Dundee victory by eight goals, will see the Balmoor club progress. Only.

Anyway, there are encouraging signs for the new campaign after three Blue Toon wins from their four fixtures.

At Borough Briggs, Paul Cairney smashed Peterhead in front in the fourth minute with a fine effort.

It was the midfielder's first Blue Toon goal and David McCracken opened his account for his new team when he converted Willie Gibson's cross in the 33rd minute.

Jamie Stevenson then came up with a moment of magic nine minutes after the restart  to put Peterhead three up.  The versatile 33 year old cut inside from the left and found the far top corner with a stunning strike.

There were no more goals but plenty for Peterhead to build on going into next weekend's League 2 opener at Annan.
