Goal-shy Peterhead beaten at East Fife

Two second half goals condemned Peterhead to defeat as new East Fife boss Barry Smith got off to a winning start in League 1.

Jason Kerr gave the Fifers the lead minutes after the interval and Kevin O'Hara struck soon after.

The Blue Toon had their moments in Methil but their lack of firepower again proved costly.

Peterhead are the second lowest scorers in the division with just 20 goals from 17 games. Leaders Livingston have 41.

The headline team selection saw Fraser Hobday replace Graeme Smith in the Blue Toon goal.

However, it was his opposite number Ryan Goodfellow, who was nearly beaten in the seventh minute, Jordon Brown directing a header against the upright.

The visitors shaded a cagey first half but they trailed three minutes after the restart. Scott Mercer's free-kick was headed on by Jonathon Page and Kerr tucked the ball away at the back post.

In the 56th minute, East Fife were well on their way to their third win of the season against the Aberdeenshire team in all competitions when Tony Wallace slipped in O'Hara, who drove a shot beyond Hobday.

Nicky Riley tried to launch a Peterhead fightback but his 79th minute effort rattled the frame of the goal.

Jim McInally's men tumble to eighth with this latest setback, two points ahead of second bottom Stranraer, who were beaten by Brechin. Peterhead-based Connor McLennan, on an emergency loan from Aberdeen, netted for the Hedgemen to claim his first senior goal.

At least someone from the Buchan town has a smile on their face.
