DUNDEE UTD 3-2 PETERHEAD (After Extra-Time)

By Glenn Moir

Peterhead bowed out of the IRN BRU Cup but only after pushing Dundee Utd all the way in a gripping third round contest.

The Blue Toon twice came from behind in a frantic first half but there were no more goals until debutant Tony Andreu headed the winner deep into extra time.

It was tough on Jim McInally's men, who belied their lowly League 1 position to put up a spirited, determined display at Tannadice.

The hosts wore their new flourescent pink away strip but the eye-catcher was Rory McAllister, who showed exactly why Utd tried to sign him last month.

The 29 year old, who rejected their advances to sign a new contract with the Balmoor club, gave home boss Ray McKinnon more than a sample of what he could have had.

Not once but twice McAlliister hauled Peterhead level and he caused the Championship side's defence all kinds of problems throughout.

Yet the match started horribly.

Utd took less than 60 seconds to open the scoring, Charlie Telfer finding the net with a long range shot.

It could have been a long afternoon but Peterhead did not wilt and they equalised in the 28th minute when McAllister rifled home from the lett side of the penalty area.

Nick Van der Velden restored the home team's advantage in the 34th minute, his crisp strike finding the bottom corner after slack defending from the visitors.

However, within a minute, the scores were level again. McAllister got on the end of Leighton McIntosh's centre to send a header past Luis Zwick.

After the interval, Utd hit the woodwork on three occasions.

Substitute Simon Murray rattled the crossbar with a powerful strike in the 72nd minute and then sent a header against the frame of the goal soon after.

As time began to run out, Telfer saw a cross sail over the head of Hobday but the ball clipped the crossbar.

That was a moment of deserved good fortune for Hobday, who was excellent throughout, making numerous key saves.

Peterhead did have one big chance in the second period and it fell for McAllister after substitute Nathan Blockley delivered a fine cross from the right.

On this instance though, the Blue Toon marksman saw his effort cleared off the line by Lewis Toshney and the ball went behind for a corner.

The tie went to extra time and in the 116th minute, as a penalty shoot-out loomed, Andreu came up with the decisive moment.

The former Hamilton creater, signed on loan from Norwich on deadline day, sent a free header past Hobday from Blair Spittal's delivery.

Utd were still not safe though, as Ryan Baptie sent a free-kick through the defensive wall and straight at Zwick, before McAllister screwed a last-gasp effort off target.

The Tangerines did just enough to avoid a banana-skin but Peterhead's performance almost made them fall flat on their faces.
