Peterhead severely stung by Wasps

Hands up if you saw this result coming?

Peterhead are traditionally slow starters but a heavy 4-0 defeat was not in the script.

In their last seven seasons, the Blue Toon have failed to win any of their league openers.

Generally, they begin with a draw but a share of the points never appeared likely at Alloa, who came flying out of the traps to continue their outstanding start to the season.

The Wasps, like Peterhead, topped their group in the Betfred Cup.

Not only that, they won all of their four games including a victory over Ross County, which knocked out last season's winners.

They are also 10 unbeaten, continuing from the tail end of the last campaign, so this was always going to be a tough test for Jim McInally's team.

The bookies have Alloa title favourites and generally they know their stuff.

This game was pretty much done by half time as the hosts took a three goal lead into the interval.

Jordan Kirkpatrick made the breakthrough with a rising shot in the ninth minute and Kevin Cawley struck five minutes later to give Peterhead a mountain to climb.

A sublime Kirkpatrick free-kick just before the break made a comeback even more unlikely and while the visitors made a better fist of it in the second half, Isaac Layne came off the bench to make it four with 20 minutes left.

Pre-match, the Peterhead manager said their visit to Clackmannanshire would be a good guide for his team, regarding the standard of opponent, who will be challenging at the top end of the league.

He now knows.
