Cup final disappointment for Blue Toon

Sun 10 Apr 2016

The Petrofac Training Cup will be staying in Glasgow this evening as Rangers ran out 4-0 winners against Peterhead at Hampden Park.

En-route to the final, the Blue Toon had only conceded four goals in the competition whilst scoring thirteen. Today, Rangers put four past them without reply.

The first real chance came after 15 minutes when Kenny Miller pushed into the Peterhead box and cut the ball back for Harry Forrester, and his shot was deflected out for a corner kick. Rangers began to dominate possession and a few minutes later they took the lead.

Miller had time on the left flank to square the ball across the 6 yard box, and Ally Gilchrist got the final touch to send the ball into the back of his own net. 1-0 Rangers.

Shortly afterwards, Peterhead's Ryan Strachan was forced off with an injury, and he was replaced by Jamie Stevenson in the middle of the park.

Rangers doubled their advantage five minutes before the break. The ball dropped to the right back James Tavernier on the outside of the area, and he rifled the ball into the back of Graeme Smith's net.

Peterhead, to their credit, almost responded immediately.  The ball was whipped in from a corner and a Peterhead player nodded the ball towards goal, but Jason Holt was on the goal line to clear.

It was a chance that could have changed the complexion of Jim McInally's half-time teamtalk altogether, and would certainly have given the Blue Toon momentum going into the second period. Alas, they went in at the break 2-0 down.

Both sides cancelled each other out for much of the second half. Nicky Riley had the Peterhead fans on their feet in the 60th minute when he took a shot inside the box. However, his effort was just wide and hit the side netting.

Five minutes from time, Rangers got a third when Jason Holt was brought down inside the box and Andy Halliday converted the resulting penalty.

The scoring was completed in the 89th minute. The ball made its way to Kenny Miller at the back post, who then tucked his shot away.

Perhaps the scoreline was a bit harsh on Peterhead in the end, but Rangers were worthy winners of this Petrofac Training Cup Final. The Blue Toon will now turn their attentions to the playoffs and, more imminently, their next league fixture away at Brechin.
