Peterhead shine in Diamonds win

Sat 24 Oct 2015

Peterhead got the better of Airdrie to register a deserved and much-needed League 1 win at Balmoor.

Rory McAllister struck the opener three minutes before the break and substitute Leighton McIntosh sealed the points in the closing stages of the match.

Airdrie arrived at Balmoor third in the table but they were kept quiet for the first half hour as the Blue Toon controlled proceedings.

McAllister fired a 22 yard free kick wide inside the first 60 seconds after Jordon Brown was bundled over by ex Blue Toon favourite David Cox, who was unlucky to be cautioned for the challenge.

Cammy Kerr, once again operating at left back with Steven Noble still injured, delivered several telling crosses, which deserved better.  One in particular seemed perfect for McAllister but he sent a back post header wide from just a few yards out.

There was another opportunity for the Peterhead top scorer in the 26th minute when Brown slipped him through on goal but he screwed his shot wide from the edge of the penalty area.

Despite the hosts orchestrating the play, Airdrie were gifted a chance from a Ryan Strachan error but Graeme Smith bailed him out by racing off his goalline to save at the feet of George Hunter.

The visitors were then denied by the woodwork in the 32nd minute as Nicolas Sumsky delivered a free-kick to the far post.  Sean Crighton sent a header back across goal for Alan Lithgow and his headed effort struck the underside of the crossbar.  The ball then bounced on the goalline before being scrambled clear.

Lithgow was unlucky again soon after, from Sumsky's corner, but Smith pulled off a great reflex save to deny the big defender's near post header.

Airdrie were having their best spell of the match when Peterhead went in front in the 42nd minute.  McAllister drove at the visiting defence with a mazy run and then smashed a fine low left foot shot into the corner of the net.

Straight from the kick-off to start the second half, McAllister cheekily shot from the centre circle and his great effort had to be tipped over by Neil Parry.

Smith then made a smart stop to keep out Taylor Morgan's 48th minute shot but the ball rolled across goal and Scott Ross had to slide in to turn the ball behind for a corner.

That was about as close as Airdrie got to denying Peterhead a victory as Jim McInally's men restricted their opponents to few opportunities.

A Peterhead second looked likelier than an Airdrie reply, with Jordon Brown and Nicky Riley both going close.

But the points were made safe by McIntosh in the 80th minute.  The pacy frontman, who replaced Riley, was quickest to react after Kerr's fierce drive was pushed out by Parry.
