CANS FOR YOUTH TEAMS

SCOTTISH FOOTBALL SCORES AS IRN-BRU PLEDGES £70,000

TO YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

- Fans urged to ‘drink it, crush it, score it’ in launch of SFL Cans for Youth Teams initiative -

Football fans and communities across Scotland are being urged to pitch in and do their bit to score a share of cash for their local youth team as IRN-BRU and the Scottish Football League today (Tuesday 21st February) unveiled a £70,000 investment to help fund the future development of Scottish football.

irn-bru02 31

The IRN-BRU Cans for Youth Teams initiative will award each of the 30 clubs in the Scottish Football League (SFL) a share of £70,000 – the more IRN-BRU cans collected, the larger the share they will receive.

Cans for Youth Teams collection bins will be placed around SFL football grounds and participating local stores and key venues in each of the 30 communities, making it easy for members of the public out shopping or fans attending a game to drop in their used cans of IRN-BRU before the cut off date of May 5th 2012.

The IRN-BRU bus will also visit every SFL club over coming weeks to encourage supporters and communities to collect Cans for Youth Teams.

irn-bru04 32

Martin Steele, Senior Brand Manager for IRN-BRU, commented: “The passion fans have for the future of Scottish football is something we share at IRN-BRU and that’s why we’re investing in developing the players of tomorrow. Whether you’re involved in your local club, you know a rising football star or you just want to support your community, you can do your bit. So instead of throwing your can away, put it to good use - drink it, crush it and score it.”

David Longmuir, Chief Executive for the SFL, added: “Youth development is a priority for all SFL teams. Year on year more resources are being placed on developing and nurturing the incredible young talent we have here in Scotland. IRN-BRU’s £70,000 investment in Cans for Youth Teams will help clubs throughout all three divisions provide better equipment, training facilities and improved coaching.

irn-bru051 32

“Last year’s campaign was a great success and I urge all football fans to help their local club climb the prize league by supporting the campaign and dropping off their empty cans in the IRN-BRU bins.“

Supporters can follow their team’s progress this year through the Cans for Youth Teams League Table which will be issued to press and available online at www.phenomenalfooty.com. The final league table will be unveiled at the IRN-BRU SFL Phenomenal End of Season Awards due to take place on the 23rd May 2012.

Blue Toon manager Jim McInally blasted his side's habit of starting games slowly, as they recovered from losing a first minute goal to earn a point against Stranraer.

Craig Malcolm opened the scoring for the visitors after just 54 seconds before Rory McAllister's spot kick three minutes before the break levelled the scores.

Despite Peterhead pushing forward in droves, they could not force home what would have proved the winning goal, McAllister's shot off the post the closest they came.

McInally admitted his side could have been blown away in the first half hour, and praised goalkeeper Paul Jarvie for a string of superb saves which kept his side in it.

The former Scotland midfielder said "It was a terrific game. We were lucky still to be in it. The goalie's pulled off a couple of double-saves to keep us in it but we came back into it the last 15 minutes of the first half and dominated the second half. We were unlucky not to win it.

"The first game we played after I came here was against Stranraer and they were miles better than us. We've been down there and there was nothing in it, and there was nothing in it again today so it shows we've come a long way.

"We've been trying to pick off the teams above us, and if we keep playing like that we'll win games."

Martin Bavidge congratulates Rory McAllister

Man of the match Jarvie was forced off with an injury in the dying stages of the game and McInally added "He's had a bang on the elbow. We don't know how serious it is yet. Jel (Raymond Jellema) is a decent keeper too, so we're OK as far as keepers go.

"In all the games he's been in, it's the first time I've seen Paul having to make saves and they were brilliant saves, good reaction saves. We're thankful for it."

A full report is now available, with match highlights on Blue Toon TV.

January's Platinum Club was drawn in the Blue Toon Lounge a few moments ago.

This month's lucky winners are:

£500 - 078 - Paula Keys

£200 - 171 - Bill Smith

£100 - 156 - Sonia Taylor

Cove Rangers take on Peterhead this Wednesday 8th Feb in the first round of the Morrison Motors Aberdeenshire Shield Draw.

K.O 8pm

Due to Saturday's postponement this game will now be played at Berwick on Tuesday 28th Feb at 7.45pm.

Jim McInally was upbeat despite watching his side succumb to league leaders Alloa Athletic at Recreation Park last night.

The Blue Toon boss praised both sides for their commitment to attacking football, in a match which saw The Wasps run out worthy 3-1 winners.

Defender Ben Gordon’s early opener was cancelled out by Rory McAllister’s thunderous strike ten minutes before the interval, only for Mark Docherty to re-establish the home side’s lead two minutes later.

On-loan St Johnstone forward Stevie May added a third, before Alloa’s former Aberdeen goalkeeper Scott Bain pulled off a tremendous double-save to deny Ryan Strachan and Dennis Wyness.

McInally said "I thought it was a terrific game. I’m not saying we deserved to win, but 3-1 was a bit harsh on us, especially second half.

"We started the game really poorly and I think it takes a wee while to adjust to the pitch, but it was two teams just going for goals.

Jim McInally

"I’ve just said to the boys that they’ve been selling themselves short all season. That’s a team that are seven points clear at the top of the league and for me, second half, there was only one team in it.

"I went a bit gung-ho, we went 3-4-3 and they caught us on the counter attack a couple of times, but their keeper has pulled off a couple of unbelievable saves out there. Only one of them needed to go in and we were back in the game.

"I don’t like praising in defeat, but we’ve won some games and now come and played the top team and I think we were every bit as good as them."

"Alloa are a really good team, they passed and moved for the first twenty minutes as though we weren’t on the park. It was quite refreshing to see two teams just going for goals and I’m sure the people who were here enjoyed it."

A full match report is now available.

Peterhead had to come from behind to maintain their good form against Queen's Park. The Blue Toon were deservedly behind to a Sean Burns goal at half-time, but a change of formation saw them hit back through a Rory McAllister double to earn the points.

Manager Jim McInally said "It was Jekyll and Hyde. The first half was shocking to say the least, and I take the blame for that because I changed the shape a bit.

"I thought we were outplayed and outfought in the first half, but after we changed it we were the better team and deserved winners.

"I told Rory to go out and score goals, to do what Rory McAllister does. In the second half you saw what he was all about, and if he keeps playing like that we’ll keep winning games.

"We’ve come a long way. Five weeks ago we were bottom of the league and now we’re up to seventh. That’s great credit to the players. They took a lot of criticism for what went on before, but I can only applaud them for their efforts."

A full match report is now available.

PFC players Aaron, Conway, Paul Watson and Alan Rattray are now out on loan for the remainder of the season.

Former loan signing from Ross County, Garry Wood, has now signed for Montrose FC.

For further information please revisit the website at a later date.

Jim McInally was able to make his first Peterhead signing last week when he brought Dundee midfielder Graham Webster to the club on loan for the rest of the season. Graham has already played first team football for the ‘Dee, yet still qualifies to play at Under-19 level, and is regarded by Dens Park boss Barry Smith to have a real future in the game. The switch to Balmoor should prove a “win-win” situation for all concerned, with Graham gaining valuable first team experience while Peterhead have the benefit of securing the services of a young full-time player who is eager to learn his trade.

BORN: Dundee 10.12.92

CLUBS: Dundee, Peterhead (loan)

CAREER APPEARANCES: 4

CAREER GOALS: None

Despite his age, Graham has already formed a strong physique and is unlikely to be intimidated by the rough-and-tumble of the Third Division. He is seen as a box-to-box midfielder who is just as comfortable defending on the edge of his own penalty area as he is moving upfield to support the attack. Jim McInally suggested that his main priority this transfer window was to improve his defensive options, if at all possible, but he has been frustrated in his efforts so far. However, in the meantime Ryan Strachan has been a revelation since dropping back into defence and Graham Webster will be aiming to prove that he is more than capable of filling any midfield vacancy that might have arisen.

Last season was one of turmoil at Dens Park with the club being forced into administration, and having a transfer embargo placed on them. One of the advantages of Dundee being unable to sign any players was that it presented opportunities to some of the younger players on the club’s staff who were handed first team experience sooner than they might have done otherwise. Graham Webster was one such player, and having been named as a substitute several times during the course of the season, he was handed a starting place for the first time against Stirling Albion last April and added a further two appearances before the season ended.

Dundee had their transfer embargo lifted last summer and were able to strengthen their threadbare squad. That meant that Graham’s hopes of earning an extended run in the side suffered a set-back, and as a result he has only had one first team opportunity this season, coming off the bench for the final 15 minutes in the narrow Ramsden’s Challenge Cup defeat to Falkirk back in August. Graham’s prospects suffered a further blow in October when Dundee signed Scotland international Gavin Rae, a player who plays the same position as Graham, and similar in style to the young midfielder.

We wish Graham all the best for his stay at the club and hope that the experience he gains at Balmoor will stand him in good stead for the future.

Blue Toon manager Jim McInally had mixed feelings after watching his side grind out a 1-0 win over former club East Stirlingshire.

Dennis Wyness netted the only goal of the game eleven minutes before the interval, after Shire keeper Callum Antell had dived full length to push away a Scott Ross header.

McInally said "It was a good result but a poor second half. We were worried about the comedown from last week but I thought we overcame it because first half we played some decent football and could have had two or three goals.

"I told them at half-time to keep at it because I knew East Stirling would keep at it. They’ve got a mentality that whatever goes against them, they stick at it. For 15 minutes in the second half they gave us a really tough time and could have got a couple of goals.

"I thought we saw the game out fairly well but it just wasn’t good enough, especially second half, and the players know that. They’ve now won three out of four games, though, and winning’s a habit. Hopefully it’s a habit we can get them used to."

A full match report is now available.

PETERHEAD 0 CELTIC 3

Peterhead's Scottish Cup adventure came to an expected end against Celtic at Balmoor, but the memories will live long for a side who didn't disgrace themselves against the current SPL leaders.

With Peterhead sitting second-bottom of the Third Division an upset never really looked on the cards, but Jim McInally's men held strong for much of the first half before Anthony Stokes netted the first of what would be a Balmoor hat-trick.

The game was over when Stokes notched his second just before the hour mark, and the third came with just eight minutes remaining.
