Balmoor Stadium hosted the Aberdeenshire Cup final as Formartine Utd edged Cove Rangers to win only their second honour since moving up from the junior ranks.

There were 10 former Peterhead players involved in the showpiece and two of them, Scott Ross and Garry Wood, played contrasting parts in the decisive moment, which came just before half time.

Ross misplaced a pass midway inside his own half and Formartine winger Scott Barbour exploited the space that the former Blue Toon defender left to smash the ball across goal.

Cove goalkeeper Stuart McKenzie could only push the ball out to Wood, who bundled in from just a few yards out.

Victorious boss Paul Lawson, who recently took over at North Lodge, said: “I am absolutely delighted.”

“To win any trophy is great but I think the first one is extra special and myself and the coaching staff could not have asked any more of the lads.”

“I have said before, and I will say it again, Cove are the best team in the Highland League and they chucked everything at us but our back four and goalkeeper dealt with everything.”
