Shane is January's top performer

Tue 09 Feb 2016

Shane Sutherland's eye-catching form has been recognised, with the Peterhead forward voted the Ladbrokes League 1 Player of the Month for January.

The 25 year old has made a key contribution in the Blue Toon's remarkable run and scored four goals last month, netting doubles against Stranraer and Albion Rovers.

Sutherland spoke to Waves Radio Sport:  "It's a gesture for a good month for the club and the team."

"We have been going well over the last 12 games but personally as well to get the award shows we are doing something right collectively and individually."

Sutherland is the second Blue Toon attacker to be honoured in the past three months, with Leighton McIntosh named November's top player.

The former Inverness and Elgin man is pleased he is showing his best form after a slow start to the season.

Sutherland said:  "I started the first couple of games and I did alright but I then I hit a sticky patch when I was not playing that well."

"I found myself in and out of the team and I was getting a bit frustrated but I just had to get my head down, work hard and try and get back in the side."

"I realised I had to take my chances when they came my way and thankfully it seems like I am doing that now so long may it continue."

Sutherland added: "It's been a positive season so far but we know there is a long way to go yet."

"We have got the Petrofac Training Cup final to look forward to in April and a lot of tough league games to come but we are in the play-off positions just now and I am confident we can stay there."

Sutherland and McIntosh hold the awards but Rory McAllister remains the Balmoor club's main source of goals.  McAllister tops the scoring stakes with 17 in League 1 and 26 in all competitions.

Sutherland, who started February with a stunning free-kick in the weekend win at Ayr, continued: "Leighton got the award in November and when you see the standard there is at Peterhead, it drives you on to do well."

"Rory is different class.  He has won many of these awards in the past and the end of season awards as well, so I'm sure he will not be too downhearted."

"He will probably still tell me he is the best player at the club!"
