Peterhead 2 Queen's Park 1

Mon 16 Sep 2013

The Blue Toon picked up their first home league win of the season, but had to come from behind once more to do so.

Rory McAllister and Fraser McLaren did the damage for Jim McInally’s men, but their goals came after Tony Quinn had given the pointless visitors the lead.

McInally stuck with the side that had beaten East Stirlingshire a fortnight ago, meaning Dean Cowie had to be content with a place on the bench, having missed out at Ochilview due to work commitments.

Peterhead started the better of the two sides, but only Graeme Sharp’s ninth minute strike from distance tested visiting goalkeeper Blair Lochhead, the youngster pushing the ball over the crossbar.

The Spiders began to find their feet, and were presented with a chance when Ryan McGeever, on-loan from Falkirk, saw his short passback intercepted. Sean Burns took the opportunity to shoot, but saw his effort blocked by Graeme Smith.

And Gardner Speirs’ side did go in front through some clever play after 24 minutes. Blair Spittal’s cross was aimed at Quinn, who cleverly allowed the ball to run through to Michael Keenan. He played the ball back into the path of the Spiders skipper, who fired into the net from eight yards.

Parity was restored two minutes before the interval. The hard-working David Cox sent a free kick into the area, and McAllister headed past Lochhead to level the scores.

The goal scorer turned goal maker five minutes after the break. He took advantage of Ricki Lamie’s hesitation in the Spiders defence, and squared for McLaren to net his first Blue Toon goal.

The Spiders had a chance to level the scores from a 65th minute corner, but it’s fair to say that they would have hoped a striker, rather than central defender James Brough, would be presented with the opportunity. As it was, Brough’s effort was well off target, and Peterhead sighed with relief.

That chance, though, was a rare glimpse for the visitors, as the home team controlling the play.

A third goal would have sealed the points, and McAllister passed up a gilt-edged change when he blazed over the crossbar when through on goal with just five minutes remaining.

It could have proved costly as the amateurs worked a final chance from a corner at the death, but Queens’ substitute trialist headed over the crossbar.
