Peterhead created the first opening in the third minute when Martin Bavidge got free of the Montrose defence but he fired in a shot which Andrews saved before Lunan cleared the rebound. Seconds later Jonathan Crawford picked up the first booking of the match for a stud up challenge on McDonald.

The Bloo Toon almost took the lead in the fifth minute when a cross from Roy McBain was headed on by Bavidge for full back Donald to net at the far post but the flag was quickly raised to signal off side. Montrose then won a free kick when Johnston was fouled on the edge of the area but from twenty five yards out Jamie Winter’s low shot went into the arms of keeper Ray Jellema.

It was Peterhead who opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Donald was allowed loads of space down the right and he fired over the perfect cross for Rory McAllister who powered home a header from six yards out. Montrose had a good chance to equalise in the 13th minute. Boyle turned his man and found Johnston inside the box and his low cross come shot was just missed by the inrushing Boyle who had continued his run at the far post.

Peterhead where forced into a change in the 16th minute when Ryan Strachan was injured and he was replaced by on loan Dundee midfielder Graham Webster. In the 24th minute a pass from Jamie Winter found the gap and put Martin Boyle through on goal but he was fouled by Scott Ross, who was booked but resultant free kick was blasted the kick over the crossbar.

On the half hour mark Peterhead went close to a second goal when another cross from Donald found the head of McAllister but this time the top scorer headed over the crossbar. With five minutes of an entertaining first half left to play Montrose were awarded another free kick after Peterhead captain Callum McDonald fouled Johnston. Winter played the ball into the box but Crighton headed over the crossbar.

In the opening sixty seconds of second half Cameron was again caught out down the left when he missed a tackle but David Donald could only shot into the arms of Andrews. The match was all square in the 54th minute when Montrose equalised. After some pressure Peterhead failed to clear the ball and this allowed Johnston into the area and he did well to reach the byeline before he cut the ball back for the former Bloo Toon Player Crawford who blasted the ball home from close range.

In the 62nd minute, Montrose went close to taking the lead, a long throw in from McNally found Jamie Winter some 20 yards out and he took aim before sending a low effort inches wide of the far post with Jellema beaten. Peterhead made their second change of the afternoon and it was a strange one taking of Webster who had only come on in the first half and he was replaced by Shaun Robertson.

In the 64th minute, Peterhead regained the lead when Davie Donald won the ball off Dougie Cameron on the touchline and found Russell Duncan who fired in a shot from twenty yards out the keeper couldn’t hold and Rory McAllister was onto it in a flash and turned and chipped the ball into the empty net.

McAllister was sniffing about for a hat trick and with 77 minutes gone he raced up the left wing and into the box before firing across goal, but Crighton was on hand to cut out the cross and put the ball out for a corner kick. Four minutes later the home side were awarded a free kick when Lunan fouled McAllister, the striker took the kick himself but Andrews pulled off a great save to kept the ball out. In the final seconds of the match Montrose won a corner kick and sent everybody forward but the corner bounced around the penalty area and was eventually cleared by the home defence.
