Elgin City 6 Peterhead 1

Tue 14 Feb 2012

Shades of the 'old' Blue Toon were evident as they crashed to a humiliating defeat at the hands of northern rivals Elgin City in this oft-postponed match.

Peterhead were boosted ahead of the match by Paul Jarvie's recovery from the elbow knock that had forced him off after an inspired performance in the draw against Stranraer a few days previously.

That meant there was just one change to the side that had come from behind to earn that draw, Dave Ross starting in place of Bryan Deasley.

The home side were without the suspended Peterhead loan target Mark Durnan, and were dealt a further blow after just nine minutes as influential midfielder Graeme Beveridge was forced off with an ankle injury.

But they swiftly recovered, and took the lead in farcical circumstances. Ross played what appeared a simple passback but Jarvie was caught unawares and could only watch in horror as the ball rolled over the line.

It was into the second half before the home side added a second, as the Peterhead defence failed to deal with a corner and Paul Millar slammed low into the net.

The game was all but over two minutes later, and again it was an own-goal which extended the lead. This time it was Rory McAllister who glanced a header beyond his own goalkeeper from Daniel Moore's corner.

Moore was involved again as Elgin netted a fourth with twenty minutes remaining, his drive looping off the head of luckless Peterhead captain Callum Macdonald and into the net.

There was some respite for McInally's side as midfielder Jamie Redman headed home a consolation with ten minutes remaining, but the ruthless hosts were not finished yet.

They added further strikes through Brian Cameron and former Blue Toon man Craig Gunn to seal a remarkable 6-1 victory and consolidate their playoff hopes, while denting Peterhead's own slender hopes of a late surge towards the playoffs.
