Stranraer 2 Peterhead 1

Mon 19 Dec 2011

Peterhead can perhaps count themselves unfortunate to still be searching for a first league win under Jim McInally, despite returning from Stranraer with nothing.

Bryan Deasley had given the Blue Toon the lead just before the hour mark, but Stranraer substitute Michael Moore levelled matters ten minutes from time, and Stephen Stirling added a second in injury time to complete the turnaround.

Deasley had started up front alongside Rory McAllister, with Martin Bavidge dropping to the bench and Graeme Sharp coming in on the flank, the only change McInally made to the team that had been denied victory at Queen’s Park a fortnight ago thanks to another late goal.

Sharp and Deasley had combined to create the first chance after nine minutes, the latter heading narrowly wide of the target as Peterhead took the game to their hosts.

Callum Macdonald saw a header come back off the crossbar, but the home side came into things and Raymond Jellema was forced into action to turn a Craig Malcolm shot round the post, after Martin Grehan had flicked on a long ball.

Stranraer defender Frank McKeown, who scored in the fixture between the sides at Balmoor earlier in the season, headed wide from the resultant corner.

And McKeown came close again, as his stunning strike forced Jellema to push over.

The sides were level at the interval, but Deasley opened the scoring just before the hour with a well-worked strike.

His pass had seen McAllister home in on goal, only for the Blue Toon’s top scorer to see his shot palmed away by home goalkeeper Ryan Marshall. The ball fell to Jamie Redman, but his cross was headed behind for a corner.

Deasley took a short corner, exchanging passes with Dave Ross before finding the angle for a shot which curled in at the far post, though Redman may claim a touch as the ball whizzed over his head.

McAllister passed up an opportunity to make the points safe, before Moore levelled matters, creating space inside the area to fire into the corner of the net from 12 yards.

It looked like the Blue Toon would at least hold on for a point, until they were cruelly undone in injury time.

Jellema’s goal kick was won in the midfield by John Kane, and he lifted a ball deep into Peterhead territory. Moore flicked on, and Stirling was perfectly placed to fire home from 20 yards.

It was a cruel defeat for the Blue Toon who remain bottom of the table ahead of Tuesday night’s rearranged match at home to Berwick Rangers.
